Japan’s survivors scavenge for hope

Just memories, debris remain in fishing town

KESENNUMA, Japan | Hideto Miura, 37, never thought he would become a scavenger.

He was working at a fish-processing plant by the ocean in his hometown of 70,000 when the March 11 tsunami forced him to flee for his life.

Like many other survivors who lost everything, he has been returning here almost daily to search for his car and anything else of value left in one of the most devastated cities in northeastern Japan.

“I have no job and nothing else to do, so I might as well look for things,” he said.

Unlike the homeless and trash-bin divers of Tokyo and Osaka, this new breed of temporary scavengers includes parents who were working as fishermen, teachers, mechanics and clothing makers less than a month ago.

At first, most were too scared of the sea to come back from evacuation shelters in schools and town halls perched on bluffs above the disaster zone.

But nearly three weeks of desperation and depravation have given them the courage to brave the nightmarish area they used to call home.

Though accustomed to blood and fish guts at work, Mr. Miura said it took time to get over the fear barrier in the 5-mile-wide swath between the sea and the highway, where police say at least 1,200 are dead or missing, and perhaps 40,000 or more lost homes and land they might never recover.

“I’m only afraid at night now,” he said, “because it’s perfectly dark, and full of ghosts.”

He was no longer disgusted by the smell of corpses buried under debris and the throat-burning acrid air from homes and vehicles charred by towering fires, which burned out of control long after the tsunamis subsided on the cold night of March 11.

Facebook for Business: A Spam-Free Way to Get People on Facebook to Visit Your Site

Okay, so when we last left our discussion, I was talking about what’s considered spammy at Facebook, and why spam at Facebook will ultimately fail. That leaves us with the question – how do you get people in Facebook to visit your site without spamming them?

How can you increase your exposure at Facebook without seeming like a spammer?

As I’ve said before, if you want to blatantly market on Facebook, you have a several options you can exercise without looking like a spammer. Get a Facebook Business Page, Buy a Facebook Ad, Participate in or Create a Group, or Leverage Your Profile.

Now, I’d never discourage you from doing any of these, in fact, you should do them all.

But I’m not going to write about them all here today. The first two are pretty self-explanatory. You create a business page – if you know how to build and manage a community, you’re all set. (If you don’t, still a discussion for another day.) And who doesn’t know how to buy an ad? Yes, there are more effective ways to use ads on Facebook, but at the end of the day, the basics don’t need to be covered.

Networking through groups and leveraging though? Not as common-sense based as you might think.

For now let’s take groups. It’s an easier topic, and leveraging your profile will probably take an entire day of videos, which I will discuss another time.

The reasoning behind joining groups on Facebook is simple: groups are mini-communities that have discussion boards, and often links, photo and video sharing areas, where people have agreed that they have a common interest, and want to exchange information about it.

Let’s say you teach people how to turn a $39 book into a $300 info-product with videos and audio CDs. You search groups and you find a book marketing group for authors.

Awesome, perfect market – if they’re marketing their books, they want to make more money, and if they want to make more money, your program is custom-made for them. There’s 2000 people in this group and you can just count the money flowing in…

Here is where most people go wrong. They go into a social group with an ad mentality, and start posting what are essentially, ads for their products on the wall (the general guestbook type area) or in the discussions. And it will backfire every time.

“But Tinu”, you might be thinking, if it doesn’t work, “why do people keep doing it”?

I’ll answer that, but first let’s look at why it doesn’t work.

The fastest revelation will come from the dating world. Ladies, please raise your hand if you would respond favorably to the following situation:

A guy walks up to you and says, “Hi, you’re cute, let’s have sex now.”

Anyone?

Yeah. If there’s 100 ladies in the room, maybe, MAYBE one chick has her hand up.

If I say, all desperate women put your hands down, that will drop to zero.

So why do people do it? The same reason why one in one hundred people respond. Desperation and/or just plain ignorance. Not stupidity, mind you. They just honestly don’t know the right way to do it.

And the desperate customer, you just don’t want to have. No matter what you offer them, they’ll claim it doesn’t work and ask for a refund. So, really, it doesn’t work at all.

Then what does work?

Value.

There are tons of ways to get people on Facebook to come to your site and even do business with you at some point – add value, bring value, create value, enhance value. All of them have two steps, first, make someone else’s life a little better, second, don’t look so desperate for a sale.

Let them come to you.

Everyone wants the folks at Home Depot to help them buy a light fixture, but no one wants to be sold a lamp.

Inter confident ahead of crunch derby

Milan derby could decide who wins Italy's Serie A as a resurgent Inter aim for their sixth consecutive title.

It is all about pride on Saturday in Italy's Serie A, as a surging Inter Milan, firmly back into contention for their sixth consecutive scudetto, aim to end AC Milan's season-long occupation of the top spot.

Milan have a two-point advantage on Inter and are the nominal hosts at the San Siro ground the two sides share, but are without suspended striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and defender Lucio.

They also won there earlier in the season but Inter have closed a gap that once stood at 13 points in mid-December and have by far the better form since the turn of the year.

Boosted by their come-from-behind win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League, Inter are on a roll and are looking to take the lead from their rivals.

In form

Inter's good form is obvious with 12 victories from 15 league games since last season's Milan coach Leonardo took over the reins from Rafa Benitez at the start of the year.

Leonardo, who spent more than a decade as a player, director and last season as coach for the Rossoneri, leads out the visiting Nerazzurri.

While Jose Mourinho's Inter claimed the treble last season, the Brazilian, in his rookie year as coach, led Milan to third place before leaving through mutual agreement amid rumours of interference in team selection.

"The derby won't be crucial because after that there are another seven rounds," said the 41-year old, who has also guided Inter to the quarterfinals of the Champions League and semifinals of the Italian Cup.

"What we wanted to do was get closer, get back in the race and challenge for the scudetto. We reach this derby in the best possible condition."

Inter midfielder Dejan Stankovic was confident ahead of Saturday's game:

"Maybe we're seen as favourites because of recent results, we've made a historic comeback and we don't want to stop there," said the Serbia captain.

"We won't let up, that's for sure, but I am a little worried about their professional pride.

"They will want to show they haven't spent 20 weeks leading Serie A for nothing, to show that they have quality."

Milan's interest in European competition is over for another season and the club's hierarchy surely would not be satisfied with merely a Cup victory for their year's efforts not to mention their economic outlay over the past 12 months.

Milan looked almost home and dry a couple of weeks ago after Inter had drawn away to lowly Brescia.

The rossoneri could have moved seven points ahead of their rivals with a victory but instead they drew at home to rock-bottom Bari and then lost away to Palermo the next week.

That has left them just two points above their bitter city rivals and under pressure also from Napoli, three points back, and outsiders Udinese, six points behind.

Robinho, likely to start in attack alongside compatriot Pato, has promised to dance the samba if he scores the winner.

"It's a key moment for us and we cannot afford to fail if we want to win the scudetto," the Brazilian said before addressing Leonardo's controversial decision to join Inter.

"It was his decision to go there but I can understand the Milan fans' disappointment. He will have to accept the consequences of his actions."

Without Ibrahimovic, Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri is likely to add muscle to his attack in the shape of Kevin-Prince Boateng rather than Antonio Cassano.

Also this weekend, third-place Napoli, who are also still in the title hunt, face fifth-place Lazio and sixth-place Roma host seventh-place Juventus.

To top it all off, there's also the always heated Sicilian derby between Catania and Palermo.

'No immunity' for Libyan foreign minister

UK foreign minister says Moussa Koussa, once Gaddafi's spy chief, is "distressed and dissatisfied" by events in Libya.

Moussa Koussa, the former Libyan foreign minister who resigned his position and fled to the United Kingdom, has not been offered immunity from prosecution and is "voluntarily talking" to authorities, British Foreign Minister William Hague said on Thursday.

Koussa was staying in a safe and secure place and engaged in ongoing discussions with British diplomats, including some who worked at the now-shuttered embassy in Libya, Hague said.

"His resignation shows that [Muammar] Gaddafi's regime ... is fragmented, under pressure and crumbling from within," he said.

Hague said Koussa had been his contact with the regime in recent weeks and that he had spoken with him several times.

"One thing I gathered between the lines of my telephone calls ... was that he was very distressed and dissatisfied" by the regime's response to protests, Hague said.

Koussa's resignation deals a serious political blow to Gaddafi, Libya's leader for 41 years, even as the regime's troops beat back rebels in the east.

Fighting reached Brega, a village near a large petrochemical plant and oil exporting facility, on Thursday, after shelling from mortars and Grad rockets forced the disorganised opposition fighters to pull back from Ras Lanuf the day before.

A big catch

Despite the lost ground, the opposition could savour some positive developments on Thursday. Koussa, described as being a pillar of Gaddafi's regime and a member of his inner circle, became the highest-profile member of the government to resign.

Western media also reported that rebels had begun to receive support from British and American special forces troops.

Agents from the Central Intelligence Agency and Special Air Service have been working on the ground in Libya for weeks, helping to identify Gaddafi's troops for air strikes and meeting with rebel forces, reports said, possibly to pave the way for training and arms shipments.

Observers have speculated that Koussa, a longtime government employee who led the regime's intelligence agency for five years, could now be providing sensitive information as well.

What arrangement he will make with the British government, considering his possible exposure to lawsuits or criminal prosecution for being involved with the regime, remains unclear, and Hague said Koussa has not been granted immunity from prosecution in the United Kingdom or elsewhere.

Members of the Libyan opposition abroad have alleged that Koussa had a role in the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, which blew up over Lockerbie, Scotland, and killed 270 people.

Koussa was expelled from the United Kingdom, where he served as ambassador for less than a year, after saying the regime planned to kill two Libyan dissidents.

The international community, sensing a hard road ahead in their effort to assist the rebels' faltering military campaign against Gaddafi, want to see more leading regime figures abandon Libya.

"It is not through actions of war that we can make Gaddafi leave, but rather through strong international pressure to encourage defections by people close to him," Italian foreign minister Franco Frattini told Canale 5 television.

Hague said the British government encouraged others around Gaddafi to abandon him and "embrace a better future for Libya."

Many other Libyan government figures have resigned since the uprising against Gaddafi began on February 15 - interior minister Abdel Fattah Younis and justice minister Mustafa Mohamed al-Jalil have both left, as have numerous ambassadors around the world.

Military setbacks

But the north African nation's future still lies in doubt, as Gaddafi's superior military continues to defeat lightly armed and undisciplined rebels, even with a coalition of Western and Arab forces using the recently passed UN Security Council resolution as a mandate to crush the regime's army, air force and navy.

Rebels told reporters on Thursday that Gaddafi's troops were driving through Brega, firing indiscriminately, and that some fighters had already withdrawn to Ajdabiya, a crossroads town just 140km from Benghazi, the center of the uprising.

Though the international coalition, which includes France, the United Kingdom, the United States and Qatar, has made it clear they will not allow Gaddafi's troops and armoured columns to overrun Benghazi, it appears that their no-fly and "no-drive" zone has ensured a stalemate, and nothing more.

Some countries, including the United States, have said they are considering supplying the rebels with weapons, sparking a debate between those who think the coalition needs to go further and make it a goal to kill or capture Gaddafi himself and others who fear getting embroiled in what they see as a conflict that could turn into tribal-tinged civil war.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani, the emir of Qatar, said on Thursday that Libyans must decide their own future and that the coalition campaign in the country is limited to protecting civilians and "nothing else," suggesting he would not support the goal of removing Gaddafi by force.

But Qatar has come out more forcefully on the rebels' behalf than most other nations: It has sent fighter jets, helped set up a new Libyan television station in Doha, the capital, and is only the second country to recognise the opposition Transitional National Council as the sole representative of the Libyan people.
